Birthday Open House Has Record Attendance
Woodrow Wilson's 155th Birthday Open House, held on December 28, set a new attendance record. Almost 950 people stopped in to see President Wilson’s birthplace, decorated for the holidays in Victorian-era style, and the Woodrow Wilson Museum which offered free admission. Guests enjoyed hot cider and ginger cookies, the same food that the Wilson family would have enjoyed with friends. Hundreds of people lined up for the new holiday tour of the manse which showcased how the Wilson's celebrated Christmas. The dining room table was set for the dessert course reminiscent of the mid-nineteenth century, and the kitchen illustrated how various desserts, such as fruitcake, pound cake and ginger cookies, were made.
Guests visited the President's Shop in its new location on 20 North Coalter Street and delighted in seeing the patriotic Christmas tree festooned in red, white, and blue ribbons. The highlight of the day was the official U.S. Postal Service postmark issue ceremony unveiling a Woodrow Wilson postmark featuring artwork by Carmella Pyanoe, a student at Shelburne Middle School in Staunton.
