Minor in Public History (College Students)

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Mary Baldwin College offer an internship-based undergraduate minor in Public History. By combining presidential library and museum work experience with a liberal arts college education, this unique program trains students for careers in the field of public history. These careers include a variety of positions at museums and other cultural tourism sites, historical societies and foundations, and in government agencies such as The National Trust for Historic Preservation and The National Park Service. Public historians also work as consultants, write commissioned histories, and do research for and direct film, radio, and television history productions. 

The Program draws upon a talented and well-trained staff from both institutions to balance theory and practice.  Classroom work can include courses in archival and museum studies, art and architecture, cultural resource management, historical preservation, oral history, and popular culture. Internships at the Presidential Library include assignments in educational programming, curatorial work, exhibit design, interpretation and living history, museum administration, and Internet e-library resources. The program aims to produce “working historians” upon graduation.
